Hybrid: The combination of two different elements. In dentistry, we have combined elements of conventional dentures and implants to offer a potentially “better” denture. When dentures are a hybrid of traditional appliances and implants, many complaints typically associated with this form of tooth replacement are avoided entirely. Centre Place Dental is happy to acquaint you with five steps to your healthiest, most attractive smile with hybrid dentures designed at our office in Lincoln, Nebraska.
All treatments start with a consultation. Drs Chris and Robin Post will take a look inside of your mouth. They will also discuss your goals, personal preferences, and other considerations with you. Hybrid dentures largely refer to those appliances that are stabilized in the mouth by implants. Each implant functions as a tooth root in the jawbone to hold the denture in place. It is important to have a healthy jawbone, which provides a solid base for the implants. We may need to discuss options to build up bone in the jaw if it has resorbed or shrunk over time.
As needed, grafting may be done to build up bone that has deteriorated over time. Additionally, any failing teeth that are still in your mouth must be extracted or removed. We generally like to wait for the tissues to heal before dentures are placed. This process can take a few months. There are some methods that allow us to place dentures immediately; however, these are provisional or temporary dentures. Once the swelling has subsided and the tissues have healed, we can work to get you your permanent denture.
Implants are applied to the jawbone during an in-office surgical procedure. The total number of implants that are placed depends on your unique needs. Generally, four to six implants can stabilize an entire upper or lower denture. You do not need an implant to support every prosthetic tooth in your denture. In the months following implant placement, these artificial tooth roots will join with the surrounding bone in your jaw. That way, implants provide a sound foundation for the denture that will later be attached to them. Again, a “healing” or provisional denture will be placed during this period as the bone and implants naturally join together.
Once your mouth has healed and the implant and bone have fused properly, information about your upper and lower dental arch(es) is collected as needed. Impressions or models of the upper or lower jaw are sent to our dental lab, which then uses any information we provide to craft your permanent dentures. Every aspect of the denture is customized to your needs, from the shades of the prosthetic teeth to the proper bite position or relationship between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed.
During your final appointments, we will ensure that your denture fits properly. Any adjustments will also be made to support your utmost satisfaction with your teeth. Of course, we will also go over ways to keep your dentures in great working order. Due to how hybrid dentures are designed – to maintain the supportive tissues in the jaw – you should be able to enjoy your new teeth for the rest of your life.
